Career

Chawla first played for India U-19 against the England U-19 team in 2004-05, claiming 13 wickets from two Under-19 Tests at a bowling average of just above 12.

He also played in the 2005-06 home series against Australia U-19, where they won the five-match limited overs series 4–1, taking eight wickets.
This resulted in his selection in the Indian Test squad for the first Test against England in Nagpur, in March 2006, and was selected for his debut in the second Test against England in Mohali, making him the second youngest Test debutant for India after Sachin Tendulkar.

He played his first ODI with India on 12 May 2007, against Bangladesh. His debut was highly successful, with him taking 3 wickets. In the second ODI with Ireland, he was equally impressive with three wickets.

Chawla was selected for 2010 ICC T-20 world cup in West indies. He was also a member of the ICC Cricket World Cup-winning Indian squad in 2011.

IPL Career

Piyush Chawla has played for several IPL teams over the years, including Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians.

Chawla is known for his leg-spin bowling, which has troubled many batsmen in the IPL. He has picked up over 150 wickets in the tournament.

Chawla started his career in IPL from the first season of IPL in 2008, in the first season of IPL he was acquired by KXIP under the captaincy of Yuvraj Singh.

In this season of IPL, he played all 15 matches and take 17 wickets and finish as the fourth highest wicket taker of the season, then he continuously played five years for Kings XI Punjab.

In the 2014 IPL season, Chawla was the leading wicket-taker for Kings XI Punjab, with 14 wickets in 11 matches. He played a crucial role in the team’s run to the final, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.

After playing six seasons for KKR from 2014 to 2019, Chawla moved to CSK to reunite with his World Cup winning skipper MS Dhoni.

He was released from the CSK squad ahead of the mini auction in 2021 and was later roped in by Mumbai Indians in the auction for INR 2.40 crore.

Then again in IPL 2023 mega auction, he was bought by Mumbai Indians for his base price of 50 lakhs rupees.
