When Southee returned home from the 2008 Under-19 World Cup as the tournament’s player of the year, England was still visiting New Zealand.
At the 2011 World Cup, which was held in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, Southee took the third-most wickets. He ended with 18 wickets at an average of 17.33 and was selected by the ICC as the 12th player and lone New Zealander in the “team of the tournament”(Shahid Afridi and Zaheer Khan jointly topped the wicket-takers).
In seven of New Zealand’s eight games, he started the bowling, and in the other, he was the first replacement. Only Southee and Nathan McCullum bowled in every game for New Zealand, who employed 12 bowlers overall in the competition.
Playing Style
Southee, a right arm medium fast out-swing bowler. While not as quick as fellow new-ball bowler Trent Bolt (and the fact that he doesn’t keep bowling at 136–141 km/h for long spells in tests), Southee’s meticulous accuracy and well disguised variations have allowed him to develop into a genuine spearhead.

In 2008 when Southee was first selected in the national team Richard Hadlee remarked of him “He runs in relatively straight, he gets through his action nicely and he moves the ball, particularly away from the batsman”.
Southee also established himself as the new opening bowling attack partnership with Boult, having taken 46% of all wickets between them since 2013, especially since the retirement of Chris Martin.
In seaming conditions or bowling with an older ball, he tends to bowl more cross-seam deliveries. In damp pitches, he tends to bowl off cutters akin to a fast off spin.
In Tests, they are also ably complemented by Neil Wagner’s short left-arm seam deliveries.

International cricket five-wicket hauls
In international cricket, Southee has 18 five-wicket hauls. He grabbed his maiden five-wicket haul against England at McLean Park in Napier in 2008, becoming the sixth New Zealander to do so, with figures of 5/55 in the first innings.
His best Test innings numbers are 7/64 against India in Bangalore in 2012.
His best ODI stats were 7/33 against England at the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
[ His best T20I stats are 5/18 against Pakistan in 2010.

IPL
The New Zealand pacer had a start-stop beginning to his IPL career. He was picked for the 2011 season by Chennai Super Kings and though he won them their first game by defending 6 off the final over, Southee played only a couple more after that as Doug Bollinger replaced him.
The championship winning team did not retain him and he was left in the wilderness for two years.
Rajasthan Royals bought him back to the league in 2014 for INR 1.2 crore. He didn’t play much because of Royals’ strong foreign recruits.
The same happened in 2015 and once Rajasthan were terminated, Southee moved to Mumbai Indians for the next two years.
